Celebrating rural America’s rich heritage through community events and traditions.
The History of Homestead Heritage
Homestead Heritage has been a staple in the community for over three decades, hosting its first Thanksgiving Fair in 1984. Since then, the organization has grown and evolved, but its commitment to preserving and celebrating the heritage of rural America remains unwavering.
Early Years
In the early days, the fair was a small, local event that brought together families and friends to share food, crafts, and stories. The organization’s founders, a group of dedicated volunteers, worked tirelessly to create an atmosphere that was both festive and educational. The fair featured traditional Thanksgiving activities, such as turkey cooking contests and pie-eating competitions. Local artisans showcased their handmade crafts, including quilts, woodcarvings, and woven baskets.
The Salvation Army of Waco will also be hosting a Christmas dinner on December 25th.

Getting Involved
If you’re interested in helping out, here are some ways you can get involved:
The Climate Crisis: A Global Perspective
The climate crisis is a pressing issue that affects us all, regardless of our geographical location or socio-economic background. The documentary “Between the Rains” sheds light on the devastating impact of climate change on the Turkana people of Kenya, a community that has been struggling to adapt to the changing climate.
The Story of the Turkana People
The Turkana people are an indigenous community living in the arid region of northern Kenya. They have traditionally relied on pastoralism, herding cattle and goats to survive. However, the increasing frequency and severity of droughts, heatwaves, and floods have made it challenging for them to maintain their livelihoods. The Turkana people have seen a significant decline in their livestock population due to the harsh climate conditions. The community has also experienced a decline in their traditional food sources, such as wild game and fish. The loss of livestock and traditional food sources has led to a decline in the Turkana people’s overall well-being and quality of life.
The Climate Crisis: A Global Perspective
The climate crisis is not limited to the Turkana people’s region; it is a global issue that affects communities worldwide. Rising temperatures, sea-level rise, and extreme weather events are just a few of the many consequences of climate change. The Arctic is warming at a rate twice as fast as the global average.
