About LunchScraps

Our Mission

LunchScraps was founded with a simple yet powerful mission: to help home cooks and eco-minded households everywhere make smarter decisions, through approachable guidance and free tools that make balancing a compost pile, measuring your food waste, rescuing leftovers, tracking what’s in your fridge, and planning meals clearer, more rewarding, and more practical.

We believe that everyone who cooks or dreams of running a lower-waste kitchen, from first-time composters to seasoned meal-preppers, deserves access to accurate tools, comprehensive resources, and trustworthy guidance. Our platform bridges the gap between good intentions and confident, well-informed decisions about composting and soil, food-waste reduction, meal planning and prep, food preservation and storage, seasonal eating, and cooking smart.

Through our free collection of tools, we help home cooks make informed decisions about compost carbon-to-nitrogen ratios, the cost and carbon footprint of the food they throw away, what to cook from the leftovers on hand, which pantry and fridge items to use first, what produce is in season, and how much to batch-cook so nothing goes to waste. Every tool is designed with real-world applicability in mind, tested against the day-to-day realities of shopping, cooking, and composting, and continuously improved based on user feedback. To go deeper, explore our Museum of Food & Sustainability, with galleries on compost and soil, the harvest, preserving food, and waste and the planet.

Our Story

LunchScraps emerged from a need we experienced firsthand. While trying to sort through conflicting advice and scattered references, we noticed a common challenge: the lack of accessible, accurate tools for the everyday decisions that come with running a kitchen, cutting the food you waste, and making the most of every ingredient you buy.

A lower-waste kitchen relies heavily on good habits and a little know-how, which are invaluable. However, a confident cook also benefits from clear answers about how to balance a compost pile, what wasted food actually costs, what to make from tonight’s leftovers, what’s about to expire in the fridge, and what to plan around this week. We saw an opportunity to combine well-researched food-sustainability knowledge with modern tools to help people make confident decisions about every meal and every scrap.

Our team began developing tools that we wished existed when we started composting and cooking with less waste. Each calculator and guide was created to solve real problems encountered when balancing a pile, weighing the week’s waste, or planning a batch cook. We tested every tool against real-world numbers, refined the logic based on feedback, and ensured that the results reflected current, widely accepted food-sustainability practice.

Today, LunchScraps serves active users worldwide, from first-time composters to lifelong low-waste cooks. Our tools have helped people balance compost, measure and cut food waste, turn leftovers into meals, track pantry items, eat with the seasons, and plan prep, and make more deliberate, confident kitchen decisions.

Our Core Values

Our Expertise

LunchScraps’s tools and guides are developed and maintained by a team with extensive kitchen and composting experience across multiple areas:

Our team includes experienced cooks, composters, writers, and reviewers who bring years of combined experience to tool development. We regularly consult industry references and trusted experts to ensure our content reflects current best practices. Our content is general informational and educational content, NOT food-safety or professional advice; results vary — always follow local food-safety guidelines for storage, preservation, and expiry, and use your own judgment before eating, preserving, or discarding food.

Looking Forward

The future of the kitchen lies in the intelligent combination of good habits and proven know-how with modern tools and clear knowledge. At LunchScraps, we’re committed to staying at the forefront of this evolution.

Our development roadmap includes expanded tools for composting, food-waste tracking, meal planning, and seasonal eating. We’re also working on multilingual support to serve the global community of home cooks better, and developing specialized guidance for different kitchens, diets, and ways of wasting less more deliberately.

Most importantly, we remain committed to keeping our tools free and accessible. As we grow, we’ll continue to prioritize user needs, ensuring that everyone has access to practical kitchen tools regardless of their budget.
